De staat Washington is samen met New York en Californië tot dusver het zwaarst getroffen in de VS door de corona epidemie. In de grootste stad van Washington, Seattle, belonen de meeste marijuana dispensaries daarom klanten die zich netjes aan de voorgeschreven social distancing houden met extra korting op de aankoop van wiet!

Seattle is het Amsterdam van Amerika

Special deals dus voor de verstandige klanten bij onder meer wietwinkels The Reef en Ganja Goddess in Seattle. Die stad ken je wellicht vanwege de grungemuziek die er in de nineties zijn oorsprong vond, of omdat vliegtuigbouwer Boeing er een gigantische fabriek heeft. Het klimaat in de Pacific Northwest-regio lijkt  op dat van Nederland, dus het regent er nogal veel en belachelijk warm wordt het er zelden.

Maar Washington State was wel mooi de tweede – na Colorado – van de 50 Amerikaanse staten waar, in juli 2014, de verkoop van recreatieve wiet legaal werd. Goed voor de bijna 8 miljoen inwoners, waarvan er zo’n driekwart miljoen in Seattle wonen.

Dus wat betreft coffeeshops – die daarginds marijuana dispensaries heten al dan niet met de toevoeging ‘medical’ ervoor – en inwoneraantal is de stad goed te vergelijken met Amsterdam. Te meer omdat de stad ook gastheer is van het beroemdste en grootste cannabisfestival van de VS: het roemruchte Seattle Hempfest. Dit jaar weer in augustus en voor de 28ste keer, mits dat vervloekte coronavirus gen roet in de wiet gooit.

Coffeeshops uitgezonderd van lockdown

Seattle heeft net als Amsterdam op dit moment alle restaurants, cafés en ‘small businesses’ vanwege de epidemie op slot gegooid. Met één uitzondering: de stenen winkels van de wietverkopers! Tot nu toe kun je als cannabisliefhebber dus nog gewoon naar je shoppie om de hoek lopen.

Maar de wietwinkel-eigenaren in Seattle moedigen hun klanten niet alleen met woorden aan om zich aan de regels van social distancing te houden (2 meter afstand houden van elkaar). De legale dealers geven speciale ‘corona-kortingen’ aan mensen die op internet bestellen en hun cannabisproducten aan een loket komen afhalen.

Braaf zijn wordt (eindelijk) beloond

“Wanneer je nog steeds niet warm loopt voor het idee om van tevoren te bestellen, hou dan in gedachten dat veel shops slechts een beperkt aantal klanten tegelijkertijd toestaan om binnen de handel uit te checken. Dus shoppen in persoon zal geen snel klusje zijn.” Aldus de lokale nieuwssite The Stranger, die trouwens om geld van donateurs vraagt om zelf het hoofd boven water te kunnen houden nu hun advertentiemarkt is ingestort.
